11:40 AM Educating Staff on Finance Best Practice and Driving the Elimination of Waste and Encouraging Sustainable Practices across Different Business Units with a Secondment Model
This session will explore the secondment model adopted by the Muswellbrook Shire Council in a bid to promote sustainable finance practices across the various business units from Water and Waste to Property, Buildings, Recreation and Works. The pilot was trialled with the Water and Sewage unit involving a member of the Finance team, being seconded as business partner over a period of 6 months. It has led to savings of over AUD 250,000 through data mining and the implementation of sustainable finance and reporting practices. This has enabled Council improve the service deliverables and ensure the Community maximises the value received from its rates. The Secondment Initiative involves:
- Setting up a Business Partner Secondment model
- Training and educating staff to drive sustainable business practices
- Exploring other strategies to embed commercially viable and sustainable practices in local government
